Colorado Surgical Site Checklist

In July of 2009, CHA's Board of Trustees approved and endorsed the use of the Colorado Surgical Site Checklist in all Colorado hospitals. CHA will work in collaboration with the Colorado Medical Society and COPIC Insurance to promote the use of the standardized Colorado Surgical Site Checklist among surgical teams across the state, educate hospitals and physicians on the importance of its use and to encourage active participation by the surgical team to ensure all safety checks have been completed.

Colorado Emergency Code Standardization Project

A 2007 survey of Colorado hospitals revealed more than 23 different systems in place for overhead emergency codes that alert providers and hospital employees to important events such as fires, hazardous material spills and child abductions. Considering many providers practice in more than one medical facility, the use of different codes for the same overheard emergency code is a patient safety concern because of the confusion it can cause.

Colorado Alert Wristband Standardization Project

In 2006, a survey of Colorado hospitals demonstrated surprising variation in the colored wristbands each hospital was using to alert providers of important medical information such as allergies, Do Not Resusitate (DNR) orders and fall risks. In 2007, CHA's Boards of Trustees voted unanimously to adopt a policy recommending every hospital in Colorado use the same alert wristband colors.
