Though a wide variety of certification opportunities are available, the following is a list of key international, federal and state organizations offering training and certification opportunities for hospital emergency preparedness coordinators. Federal and International Organizations
- Federal Emergency Management Agency
FEMA, the federal agency charged with building and supporting the nation's emergency management system, offers a variety of certification opportunities. The FEMA Emergency Management Institute offers independent study programs for ICS, NIMS, and other emergency management related topics.
- Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP)
HSEEP provides resources, trainings and technical assistance related to its national standards for exercises.
- Incident Command System (ICS)
Look here for a variety of trainings on FEMA’s standardized, on-scene, all-hazards incident management approach.
- International Board for Certification of Safety Managers
Certifications offered include CHCM - Certified Hazard Control Manager, CHSP - Certified Healthcare Safety Professional, CPSO - Certified Patient Safety Officer, CHEP - Certified Healthcare Emergency Professional and CPSM - Certified Product Safety Manager.
- National Preparedness Directorate National Training and Education
The National Preparedness Directorate (NPD) online course catalog provides searchable, integrated information on courses provided or managed by FEMA ’s Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP), Emergency Management Institute (EMI), and National Training and Education Division (NTED).
- US Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA)
PHMSA provides publications, self-training products, and in-person training opportunities to help hospitals comply with the requirements of the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR).
